The Cadore is a nice area including several typical mountain villages, such as San Vito di Cadore, close by Cortina d'Ampezzo, Borca di Cadore, Pieve di Cadore, Calalzo di Cadore and Auronzo di Cadore.
The Cadore area is situated in the heart of the Dolomites, surrounded by several famous mountains, such as the Antelao, Pelmo, Croda Marcora, the Tofane, Mt. Peralba, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Mt. Cristallo, the Croda Rossa, the Marmarole and Nuvolau.
Among the most relevant places in Cadore, one in particular is worth a visit: Misurina and its lake, that mirrors the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Three Peaks of Lavaredo) - perfect for an high-altitude stay, thanks to the high altimetry, scarce damp, presence of ultraviolet radiations and absence of sudden climatic changes. As a result, this is the ideal place to treat respiratory diseases and the well-known hospital "Pio XII", where juvenile asthma is treated, lies here.
Pieve di Cadore is a well-known culture centre as well as Titian's home: the great, brilliant Renaissance painter was born here in 1490. Also the Eye-Glass Museum, with over 2000 frames dating back to the long period from the Middle Ages till nowadays, is worth a visit.
Do not miss the frescoed facades in Cibiana, the so-called "murales" representing rural life and work in the past.
Visit the Messner Mountain Museum, situated on the top of Mt. Rite (m. 2181). It contains a special photographic exhibition entitled "La vita di allora" and some miniature Cadore houses by Giuseppe Toscani.
In summer the Cadore area offers many leisure opportunities, relax and open-air activities. It's no accident that Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI chose Lorenzago di Cadore as holiday resort.
Staying in Cadore means spending quiet holidays in the heart of nature, enjoying long hikes or easy walks in the larch and fir-woods, going mushrooming and fishing. They say that even Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of radio, used to walk in the riverbeds in Borca in search of fossils.
Finally, you can go in for an exciting walk along the old railway, famous as the Dolomites cycle path, connecting Calalzo di Cadore to Cortina d'Ampezzo.
In winter you can choose among San Vito di Cadore ski centre, that offers 14 km of slopes and the 5 ski areas situated around Cortina d'Ampezzo, i.e. Faloria-Tondi, Cristallo-Mietres, Tofana, Socrepes-Pocol, Falzarego-Cinque Torri. Cross-country lovers find nice trails in the woods, too.
SOMETHING CURIOUS...
In the Museum in Selva di Cadore you can see the remains of the man of Mondeval found in 1987 around San Vito di Cadore, between Mt. Pelmo and the Lastoni di Formin. This man has been identified as a prehistoric hunter, who lived about 7000 years ago; this is the only Mesolitic finding at high altitude (2150 m).
